The Rights for Residents Campaign

What’s the challenge?

To ride the world’s fastest Zip Line, soaring over Penrhyn Quarry in Snowdonia, reaching speeds of up to 125 mph, over 1.5 kilometres. Reaching 0 to 60 mph in just 6 seconds while traveling 500 feet above sea level!!!

Looks and sounds terrifying – so why are we doing it?

Despite our fear of heights, we’re doing this to raise funds to sustain the Rights for Residents Campaign, now part of the charity, Care Rights UK.

Our campaign ensured thousands of vulnerable residents, isolated in care homes were reunited with their families during the Covid pandemic restrictions. We’re now on the cusp of achieving “Gloria’s Law”, which would guarantee ALL of us the legal right to a Care Supporter, a close relative or friend, that could be with us in all circumstances. This would ensure that people in hospitals and care homes are never again completely cut off from those they love. Any one of us could find ourselves needing full-time care one day. As a charity made up of families and experts, we also continue to campaign on wider issues that would help to improve the quality of life for all those receiving care.

Giving a little will help a lot!

You can get fully involved in our team challenge without stepping foot in Snowdonia and hurtling down a zip wire at 125mph. From the comfort and safety of your own armchair, you can donate to sponsor our team of eight and help us reach our fundraising target. Spare a thought for the reluctant “thrill seekers” for whom there’s no turning back now.
All donations matter. Whether large or small, your donations will help sustain our campaign and motivate us to complete this challenge. The sleepless nights and hot sweats have already begun. Videos will follow of the before and “After Eights” once it’s done! See you on the other side!

Please be aware that when making a donation, you'll be asked to leave a tip for GoFundMe. This is definitely not compulsory and the tip can be changed to zero by simply moving the green slider to 0 on the payment screen before you submit the donation.

Who’s doing it?

Diane Mayhew - Rights for Residents Campaign Manager
“If my Dad could see me doing this – he’d have discouraged me, but been proud in equal measure! Sadly he’s not here to witness this madcap venture, but I will find the courage to face my fear of heights in honour of him nonetheless. My Dad died of Covid in April 2020. I nor any of his family were given the chance to say goodbye. This is for you Dad!”

Jenny Morrison - Engagement Lead at Care Rights UK
“I started campaigning to see my mum Jean, when she was forcibly separated from her family, during the pandemic. She spent the last year of her life confused, isolated and distressed, before passing away in August 2021. The legacy of guilt and trauma is something no family should ever face in the future. Mum would have found the thought of me doing this challenge hilarious, as I’m certainly no daredevil. The only thing that could have impressed her more is if I’d fulfilled her ambition for me to appear on ITV’s The Chase!”

Kate Meacock - Founding Member of Rights for Residents
Because my Mum can’t
Because my Dad can’t
Because I can (reluctantly)
Because we need Gloria’s Law
Because we need to campaign on so much more
Because Di told me I had to!

Helen Wildbore - Director at Care Rights UK
I’m overcoming several fears to do this challenge. I’m petrified of heights, I don’t even like fast rollercoasters! But I’m doing this for everyone who has been isolated and afraid over the past three years. It’s been a truly horrendous time for so many people and we’re absolutely determined that the pain and suffering of isolation never happens again. Please help us bring about Gloria’s Law, for you, your family, for us all.

Trevor Greenidge - Helpline Officer at Care Rights UK
“Why am I doing this? I’ve always wanted to be seen as a ‘high flyer’ and I’m not overly anxious or afraid of the challenge, so why? Then it all comes flooding back, as I remember those voices I heard on the helpline. Voices filled with worry, distress, fears and far too many times guilt muffled by stifled tears. Yes, that’s why. I’m doing this for them and will be thinking of them in the hope that they somehow share the experience with me and smile. Never again! Let’s make Gloria’s Law happen!”

Sharon Clay - Rights for Residents Campaigner
“Were you drunk?” would have been my mum’s words if I could have told her I’d agreed to do this challenge (my fear of heights and speed means I’m not a sensible candidate) BUT she would have been proud. I lost precious time with my mum over hospital and care home lockdowns (official and unofficial). Not being there holding her hand, in her time of illness and fear, will haunt me forever. My mum died recently (in January) but not a day’s gone by when I haven’t grieved over that lost time. I’m determined others should not suffer the same misery ever again. To the people of North Wales I apologise in advance – my screams of terror will be quite loud!”

Angela McIntyre - Rights for Residents Campaigner
“When I was asked to take part in this challenge I had to say Yes. How could I say no to a team of ladies who have given so much to campaign for the rights of all of our loved ones?
Sadly, I was not 'allowed' to see my poor Mum for over 13 months and then for only 30 minute weekly visits, up until the last 5 days of her life. My Mum would be saying "you must be crazy!" but secretly very proud”.

Claire Inglin - Rights for Residents Campaigner
"The care home is in lockdown you can only VIEW your mother through a window!! This statement was the last straw and made my blood boil.
It was at this time I discovered Rights for Residents and the fight started. For me, it will continue until Gloria's Law is in place. Never again should husbands, wives, children, mothers, fathers be forced apart, and those in care (young or old) be condemned to die alone, in the misbelief they’ve been abandoned by their families.
Bring on the Zipwire Challenge, by sponsoring our efforts you’ll be helping to continue the fight for GLORIA'S LAW.”

Thanks so much for sponsoring us – we genuinely do appreciate your support and encouragement.
