Rilynn's Scoliosis Journey
Donation protected
My daughter, Rilynn, was diagnosed with Congenital Scoliosis. Congenital Scoliosis means that you were born with the condition and occurs as the spine forms very early in pregnancy, one or more of the vertebrae (bones in the back) do not form completely or do not separate properly, other abnormalities may also be present such as missing ribs or ribs that did not separate.
We have been battling this and going back and forth to Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. They have been watching Rilynn for 10 years now. All kinds of scoliosis can worsen during growth and allow a large curve to progress. Treatment depends on the child's age, how much growth the child has remaining, the type of scoliosis and the severity of the curve. If the curve progresses to greater than 50 degrees, surgery may be suggested and for Rilynn we knew it was coming but didn't want reality to set it. On April 12, 2021 we were told to get prepared for surgery because Rilynns spine has progressed to 64 degrees and surgery is a must. We have not yet found out a surgery date but it is in the very near future.
Due to her surgery I will have to stay in the hospital with her for a week and then take off of work for multiple more weeks, depending on her recovery. As that being said, my work does not offer any FMLA or leave for me due to me working for a small family owned business. I have de the "GoFundMe" account so that we can prepare for the future, if I need to pay out of pocket for ANYTHING that Rilynn may need, medicine, equipment and any type of physical therapy and also future bills ahead for when I am off work.
Rilynn is 11 years old, she is a very sweet, energetic, outgoing, young lady. She loves her sports, basketball, softball and can't wait to add volleyball into the mix. That is the one thing she is worried about with the surgery is that if she will be able to continue her sports afterwards. She will be out of all activities for at least 6 months with recovery and physical therapy.
