Rings Martial Arts Pandemic Relief

Donation protected

The effects of COVID have greatly impacted small businesses around the world.  My families business, Rings Martial Arts is among one of those greatly impacted with a uncertain future. In the beginning of the Corona Virus outbreak, they were forced to close as they were deemed"non-essential."   At the end of May, they got  the go ahead from local authorities, and were able to open their  doors to  students and families. Complying with guidance and protocols from the state and county, they were excited to re-open. Optimistic of a busy summer of Karate Camp, they have held on as long as they could. With a low census of students, the financial burden and  the future of Rings is at stake.  A locally owned, family business that started from the ground up.
Janet and William Ring began teaching Martial Arts  in Nichols School in Monona, back in 1985.  Starting as a very small studio, William Ring, (2nd degree  Black Belt) along with his wife Janet started what was to become an icon in Madison. The Ring Family was known in the community as one of the first to offer free self defense classes for Women and children during a time of crisis. This also attracted the media and opened a platform for empowering  vulnerable individuals in the area and gave them a resource and safe haven to learn self defense techniques.  In a article posted in Wi State Journal the Rings stated"we want to be responsible for our communities needs."
The need to keep kids safe prompted the  creation of  a unique  after-school program for children.  Parents had uncertainty with options for children being too old for daycare but too young to be home alone.  Offering a safe haven for before and after school, we gave peace of mind for busy parents.  Core values of Manners, respect, confidence and discipline were taught as a lifestyle and was the foundation for the Student Creed which was read aloud before every class.
Evening adult classes were held 4 times a week along with sparring and boxing lessons.  With the collaboration of The Ho-chunk Nation, the Rings were able to sponsor multiple Golden Glove Boxing champions.
The Ring's family has been a willing partner to help the community. You could see them at local parades, self defense seminars and fundraising events throughout the years. "Kicks for a Cause"  was a fundraising tournament held to raise funds for sponsorship and scholarships.  With those efforts, many local children were able to benefit with free tuition. In 1993, they taught the WI  Badger football team who went on to win the RoseBowl that season! With the collaboration of The Ho-chunk Nation, the Rings were able to sponsor multiple Golden Glove Boxing champions.  Featured in Black Belt Magazine,  Receiving  the "Top Notch Teacher Award" and nominations for the  Crystal Apple Award are just a few recognized achievements on display at Rings.
For all the years of dedication and support they have given, it is our hope that you can help. We are reaching out to all current and past students and families to secure a future for Rings Martial Arts. Any support is appreciated during this uncertain time.  To lose their business will be a great loss not only to William and Janet, but to all the families who have been with us over the years.
