River Mite Overhaul Fund
River Mite, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway Preservation Society’s first steam locomotive, is due a Major overhaul. The Society has launched an appeal to help fund this and get the loco steaming again. The overhaul will include vital components being replaced as well as an new tender being constructed. The work is being carried out by John Fowler Engineering, Bouth, Cumbria.
River Mite is owned by the Preservation Society which raised funds for its construction in the 1960s. The 0-8-0 frames from the former Poultney steam tender chassis from River Esk were used as the basis of the new locomotive.
The locomotive made history by being delivered across the Pennines by traction engine Providence and was commission on 21 May 1967. Since then, it has been on permanent hire to the Railway Company
