River Wye Kayak Challenge - Completing 70 miles along the testing River Wye in 4 days

Saturday 8th - Tuesday 11th August
Charley Bickers has decided to put together his own charity fundraising initiative to provide a life-changing prosthetic limb for Ebrima Susso, an inspirational young above-elbow amputee from The Gambia.  The challenge has been sponsored by Mulberry Bow & Atlantic Screen Music ensuring every penny of donations will go directly towards this worthwhile cause.
2 teams comprising of 5 kayakers will undertake this  arduous challenge to raise funds for Ebrima Susso, a young amputee from The Gambia.
Ebrima, now 24, had to have his right arm amputated above the elbow following a riding accident. Previously a talented footballer and gifted student, Ebrima felt increasingly isolated by his limb difference and, when he also had to give up football, the game he loved, he became depressed and found it hard to leave his home.

Life isn’t easy for amputees in The Gambia where people with limb difference can be socially stigmatised and also find it very difficult to obtain prosthetics.
The prosthetic arm he has sourced is apparently very comfortable to wear and is available in Jordan, Uganda and Kenya, it costs 2,500$, roughly £2000…

Ebrima felt strongly that having a prosthetic arm would enable him to feel more ‘normal’ and less isolated. The increased confidence would then enable him to finish his education and, importantly, be able to give more support on the family farm. He took action and found a company that could supply a suitable prosthetic arm. He then set about contacting every charity he could find that he felt might be able to help him, including The Douglas Bader Foundation, which is where we met him. And he didn’t give up. The DBF is a very small charity with limited funds and the Bader Grant remit doesn’t allow for the giving of grants towards living aids. However, Wendy McCleave was so impressed by Ebrima’s determination to achieve his dream and the work he had already put into it that she was determined to help him and started a fundraising page, which has raised £200 to date.

Charley, Wendy’s son, was keen to do what he could to support Ebrima’s dream and
The River Wye Kayak Challenge was born!
Ebrima truly is an inspiring young man. He has shown incredible strength of character in pursuit of his goal. He is a great support to his family but wants to be able to do more. He is determined to finish his education and, an ardent Chelsea fan, would love to play football again one day.

Please support this great challenge and show this courageous and inspiring young man that there are people prepared to make his dream a reality.

Let's change a life together!
