TRACS Distemper Fund

Donation protected
Thompson River Animal Care Shelter (TRACS) is a 501c3 non-profit Animal Rescue that assists in the rescue and rehoming of dogs and puppies saved from high kill animal shelters. We are asking for the public's support in helping us test and care for several dogs that have been diagnosed with Distemper, or have been exposed to  the Canine Distemper virus.

TRACS received many dogs a few weeks ago from a few different shelters in California. With most canine transports we expect a bit of illness a few days after the new dogs arrive. Just the stress of traveling can lower a dogs immune system, and with each group of dogs we usually have some of the pups come down with Kennel Cough, a very common and very treatable illness.

Shortly after arriving a little dog named Peter went to the vet, he was treated for what everyone thought was a very bad case of kennel cough. A Veterinary Technician quickly fell in love with the little guy and chose to foster him with hopes of adoption.

As Peter's condition continued to deteriorate over the coming 2 weeks he was tested for canine distemper. The test came back positive.  Two Veterinary practices and his devoted foster all tried their best to save Peter, but sadly Peter passed away in the loving arms of his foster. It is likely that Peter was infected with the distemper virus before ever receiving his first vaccine.

Exposure to Peter was very limited, and all the dogs that had  direct contact with him are being closely monitored.  All dogs at the shelter that may have had indirect exposure to Peter are also being monitored and tested for distemper. This is a necessary precaution, but an expensive one. Unfortunately each dog requires 2 of the costly distemper tests, and vet expenses for the ill dogs and the vet care for poor Peter will quickly deplete our shelters funds.

Distemper is a terrible and contagious viral illness that thankfully can be almost entirely prevented by getting dogs properly vaccinated. But dogs coming into a shelter more often than not have never been vaccinated, or have incomplete vaccinations.

As we pray for the recovery of our sick dogs this holiday season, we also hope that some of our supporters may be able to assist TRACS and our dogs as we try to treat, and contain this virus. TRACS will be following the same guidelines that PAS (Panhandle Animal Shelter) was directed to use earlier this year by the University of Wisconsin .

Any donation amount would help relieve some of the financial stress on our organization, as well as healing thoughts, vibes and prayers. We and the dogs will be forever grateful.
