"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work; if one falls down, his friend can help him up…”
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
Hello! My name is Alex Caprariello. I am a 25-year-old graduate student in my second semester at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism. I am working towards my Master’s degree in Sports Journalism. My focus is in broadcast and I expect to graduate this December.
I have been blessed with an incredible, life-changing opportunity. It is my hope that I can share this opportunity with you.
Less than a month ago, the administration at my school hand-selected 25 students to travel to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Lucky for me, I was one of those selected students.
I have been given a chance to live in Brazil for three weeks in August to cover the American athletes competing in each of the games. We plan on creating print, broadcast and online stories for a variety of Arizona news outlets and a handful of national outlets.
This is an opportunity to cover what many consider to be the greatest sporting event in the world. On top of that, I would be doing so by the age of 25, an unheard of feat for most professionals in my field. I feel fortunate to go to a school that provides its students with such fantastic opportunities to advance their careers. For three weeks, I will be given credentialed access to athletes, training facilities, and all things red, white and blue. Like I said, an unbelievable experience!
However, this wonderful experience comes at a cost. A rather large cost, to be honest. Aside from “pocket money” for unavoidable expenses while living there, I am also responsible for a program fee as well as the plane ticket to Brazil. When added up, the total sum I need to gather equals $10,000.
This is where I hope that you will want to join me on my mission! There are three ways that you can help this young journalist achieve his lofty goal of traveling to South America for the Olympics:
1) Donate! Any contribution, large or small, goes a long way towards helping me on this journey. This is the most effective way to help! I hope to earn $5000 by May 25, half of what is truly needed to get me to the Olympics. By donating to this cause, you can significantly contribute first-hand to an experience of a lifetime!
2) Share My Cause! In my classes at Cronkite, we have learned in extensive detail the power of social media in today’s world. I am hoping that you may be willing to use your social media, along with your word-of-mouth, to let your family and friends know about my mission to travel to Rio in August. Please share my story and my gofundme page to your friends and family! By sharing it with just three friends, you can help me by continually expanding my network of aid.
3) Pray for me! Lord knows, I am going to need it! My family and I have gone through some tumultuous times in our lives, but we have survived and thrived because of the care and prayers of family and friends – that support does not go unnoticed! If your thoughts and prayers are all that you can offer towards my mission to Brazil, then that is enough to satisfy me for a career lasting a lifetime in journalism.
When all is said and done, I’m sure many of you would like to know exactly how your contributions are helping. So, allow me to offer you something in return for your donations, time and thoughtful consideration.
Please join me in this journey by including any and all e-mail addresses where you would like to receive updates regarding my time before, during and immediately after Brazil. I promise to continually update you with all the wonderful moments I am experiencing, people I am talking to, and sights that I am seeing so that you may feel a part of the action as well! Include your e-mail addresses either in the comments section or in a personal email sent directly to [email redacted].
Thank you, once again, from the bottom of my heart. I am so thankful that you want to be a part of my life, and I hope that you see merit in this cause. I plan to take advantage of every second that I am there, and I am confident that you will be with me in spirit every step of the way.
God bless,
Alex Caprariello
