My son Braxton has a disease called arthrogryposis. (Description of arthrogryposis)
Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), or simply arthrogryposis, describes congenital joint contractures in two or more areas of the body. It derives its name from Greek, literally meaning "curving of joints" (arthron, "joint"; grȳpōsis, late Latin form of late Greek grūpōsis, "hooking").[1] Children born with one or more joint contractures have abnormal fibrosis of the muscle tissue causing muscle shortening, and therefore are unable to do passive extension and flexion in the affected joint or joints.[2] AMC has been divided into three groups: amyoplasia, distal arthrogryposis, and syndromic. Amyoplasia is characterized by severe joint contractures and muscle weakness.[3] Distal arthrogryposis mainly involves the hands and feet. Types of arthrogryposis with a primary neurological or muscle disease belong to the syndromic group.

My husband and I were not expecting this at all, nothing showed on the ultrasounds and my pregnancy was normal. The doctors said that a boy shouldn't get Arthrogryposis because it only occurred in the females on my side of the family. So when Braxton was born it was a huge shock to see his hands in fists, and both feet turned sideways. We also found out that both of his hips are completely out of the sockets. Braxton has vertical talus and double hip dysplasia, and he can't open his hands at all so he can't really be a normal baby yet. He also had pyloric stenosis that we had to do emergency  surgery on in March. He recovered quickly, but he also needs a hernia surgery very soon. We live in Minot ND and travel to Minneapolis Minnesota every two weeks for casting on his legs to fix the vertical talus. Braxton will most likely have 4 or 5 surgeries before he's one year old. But in spite of everything Braxton is the happiest baby I have ever seen and is always smiling. Anything helps us even if it's just a kind word or simply just sharing our story.
