My name is Danielle Alaeloa Hafoka Lavaka, born & raised of Lahaina. For those of you who know me and my little family, this is def out my comfort zone. I have always been a “ you want it done right, you do it yourself “ type gal. I rather sink in quick sand and figure out how to get myself out before I put my hand out to reach or ask for help from ANYONE (my siblings will tell you).
Tuesday, August 08, 2023 changed ALL of that. Tuesday, August 08, 2023 is stamped permanently with no ink in my heart. A day not I, not my neighbor, my family, my friends, & now the WORLD will never forget. In a matter of HOURS, my entire town was set in flames and our entire lives were burnt to the what seemed like the core of the earth as we watched each other flee for dear life.
Hurricane seasons in the islands bring trade winds, high winds, flood warnings & wildfires. Just another day in paradise. What came along with Hurricane Dora was a demon wildfire we were unprepared for. She took our homes, our neighbors, our families, our pets, & friends. Locals (residents) of Lahaina, of Kula, of Kihei family lost what they worked so hard for to live above waters and provide in our version of “ paradise “.
Without warning our entire town had been indulged by flames. Everyone lost everything. But not everything, what she couldn’t take was the Island from the people of Lahaina. This is the story of a little resilient town in the middle of the sea. Help us all strive for what it is a lot of families really need, somewhere to call home again. Had I gone to work on this day, I would have lost these 4 little faces. Your generous donations would go to help me and my little family with the followings:
