Roadside Mum needs a power chair

Donation protected
Hi, I’m Sam, a couple of years ago, I came to GoFundMe because I needed a mobility scooter. I promised then I’d pay it forward when I could with my PIP backpay. It was an honour to be able to do that when that time came. Now though I want to pay it forward in another way, with assistance and support, after my good friend just found herself in the exact same situation as I was in.

My good friend needs to remain anonymous for safety - we’ll call her Emma. You might know her better as Roadside Mum from Twitter, who recently forced Chartwells, part of the billionaire Compass Group, to have to radically improve Free School Meals for Britain’s poorest children.

Emma is a 40 year old single mother with two children of primary school age at home. Emma worked in a supported housing project for vulnerable families, helping parents find their feet after homelessness and other crises, before she developed M.E. 18 months ago.

M.E. is sometimes also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. M.E causes Emma extreme exhaustion, muscular and joint pain, troubles with sleeping, “brain fog”- sudden confusion and forgetting of simple words, headaches and dizziness and falling over if she bends or if she moves too quickly. (Like me).

Emma is finally (!) applying for PIP now, having firstly not accepted being disabled (who does, it’s not an easy process), and despite being repeatedly pestered to do so by good friends (including me). There’s absolutely no way she won’t get PIP, having been through it myself it’s glaringly obvious she meets the criteria; however as many of us know, this can be a long, drawn-out process. Emma needs the power chair NOW, not in a couple of years time, which is how long it took me with the full appeal process, hence I am setting up this GoFundMe, because I can’t sit by and watch someone else go through what I went through.

Emma has the same issue I had which is that it’s impossible to get a powered chair into her house, so she will need a wheelchair that is lightweight and foldable, exactly like I did. I have a lot of experience with these chairs and an entry level model sells for around £1500 which will cover her needs, for now.

If we did manage to raise more money than the target, then I already have whole list of things she could buy that would make her life a lot easier, as it did for me when I was in the same position.
Emma shares very similar ethics to me and if this GoFundMe is successful, she’s going to pay forward the amount the chair cost, from the PIP backpay when it arrives, to someone else in need, just like I did.
