Robert D Clay (March 26, 1962- November 2, 2021)

Rob grew up in San Pedro, CA with his parents and younger brother Chuck, on a 65’ Schooner built from the ground up by their father. The family lived aboard, and Robs younger years were spent roaming the docks of CBYC, where many memories and lifelong friends were made. Being brought up around boats, Rob always loved the water. It was only natural that he also took an interest in windsurfing. When he was 22, he tried out for the Olympics. In addition to windsurfing, Rob also spent many years running marathons.

Rob had a loving 30 year marriage to his wife Dee, where he became the father of two boys, Brendan and Darren. His sons were his best friends, and everyone who came into the circle saw Rob not only as a friend, but as a man highly respected for just being who he was. Rob was like a second father to many, and was known around town as “Masta Clay”. One of Robs favorite pastimes was hanging out in the garage, listening to the boys and their friends (commonly referred to as “The Posse”), play their music. He never failed to make it known how proud he was of them, and how much love and joy those moments brought him.

Sailing was one of Robs biggest passions, and he spent as much time on the water as he could. He loved going to Catalina, and enjoyed teaching his boys through sailing. Rob sailed in multiple regattas with his brother, and was very well known in the sailing community. In his professional life, Rob was a master carpenter. He built first class custom staircases with a level of craftsmanship that cannot be taught. He had an eye and level of precision that very few are gifted with. One of his works was even featured on the cover of Architectural Digest, with a staircase for Diane Keaton. His memory is also build into his niece’s home, having beautifully done the tile and woodwork throughout.

Rob was one who had no filter, always spoke his mind, and was completely unapologetic for the way that he lived. He was sarcastic, blunt, never afraid to discuss his stance on politics, and most definitely never cared what anyone thought of him. He remained true to himself through and through, and never changed for anybody. He always said that he lived his life with no regrets, and that’s something to be respected. Rob will forever be remembered just the way he was, and his legacy will live on strong through all the lives that he touched. Rob also had 4 half siblings- Bobby, Scott, Dee Dee and Lydia who he shared a father with. Brendan, Darren, and the rest of the Clay family genuinely thank you for your donations, and we hope that you continue to keep Rob in your thoughts and in your hearts.
