J29 Homes is a program that helps first-time homebuyers on Chicago's south and west sides build generational wealth and transform their communities. We want to close the wealth gap between White and minority communities by providing knowledge, resources, and support to educate and empower first-time homebuyers, like Roberta, whom you'll meet in this video. And you can get involved!
Roberta is a single foster mother of three who was raised in a housing project on Chicago’s south side with her five siblings. Her family never owned a home, but she wants to change that for her children. With J29 Homes, Roberta can purchase her first home for far below market value— at $125,000 or less! 1) Build Family Wealth. We know that homeownership is the #1 means of building lasting family wealth—in fact, homeowners have an average of 40x the household wealth of a renter. But although the population of Chicago is 32% Black, only 8.1% of home loans go to majority Black neighborhoods. Less lending leads to less homeownership, which leads to less wealth to send children to college, to create businesses, or even to take family vacations.
2) Transform Communities. Violent crime increases 19% for every abandoned building on a block. Do you want to decrease violence? Then increase homeownership! Homeowners occupy space that would otherwise be used for crime. In addition, homeowners have a vested interest in their neighborhoods, and take ownership of their community playgrounds, schools, and streets.
3) Pay It Forward. Through J29 Homes, your financial gift will have a ripple effect to future homebuyers on Chicago's south and west sides for years to come. Once her home is renovated, Roberta will take out a conventional bank loan to purchase the property, and her payments will go into a fund that will assist another family with their home purchase. The funds keep blessing future families as they recycle 3-4x a year!
