Robert McField Cancer Fight

Donation protected
One month ago, a trip to the ER turned our lives upside down.  After working as a nurse in the ER, our visit for my boyfriend's abdominal pain was routine from beginning to end. Now, just to give you an idea, this man is a 6'6, 280lb football player for Pittsburg State University.

Seeing him curled up in the fetal position wasn't normal. We had went through the same thing a few months back and came out with lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes) due to what was believed to be a stomach flu. I knew exactly how the visit would go: IV, pain medicine, nausea medicine, CT scan. This visit was different though. The CT scan showed the swollen lymph nodes had grown significantly compared to his last scan. It was highly likely he had cancer! As our two year old continued to bug me about going "bye-bye", my head started to spin. Robert had no idea what the doctor was saying because he was on pain medicine.

Three days later we ended up at the ER again. He was having tingling and numbness in his arm. It turns out there was a bony tumor on his spine, which meant the cancer was also in his bones at this point. This new information caused me to find myself following his ambulance up to KU Medical center, one of the best cancer institutes around. Ten days and a dozen procedures later, we had our answer. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. We were told at 5 years he has a 55-65% chance to be alive. Medically, these are great odds, but personally, it still scared our families and us! Robert is a family man. He's very close with his family. All kids absolutely love him, and he's guaranteed to light up any room in walks in. We had plans!! He had another year of football at Pittsburg State University left! His family wants to watch him graduate with his Bachelor's degree. We want to get married, have more kids, buy a house,  and much more!! This was NOT part of our plan!

He started chemo right away. 100% of his cancer cells were multiplying; his cancer is a fast-grower! There was no more time to be wasted. He was in excruitiating pain from the cancer, which found in several areas in his body, including the lymph nodes, muscles, and bones. Robert was ready to fight. When the doctors came in to give him his official diagnosis, he had a positive outlook. He told us, "Let's do this! I got my team. I'm going to carry you all on my back."

His first round of chemotherapy knocked him down again. Sick, Nauseous, Exhausted, Hurting. It has been a constant struggle. I worked over night from 7pm-7am, and Robert cared for Kassidi while I was at work. He fed her, bathed her, got her ready for bed, and got up with her when she wasn't feeling good. Due to being sick from chemo, he was no longer able to care for her while I worked. I quit my job to care for him and Kassidi at home. Now we have no income, a stack full of medical bills, and a list of new items we need to purchase for him to be successful here at home. His treatment will go over a course of 6 months! We need you help!!

Our goal of 25,000 is just a number to help with medical bills and living expenses. Anything you can give will help!! I know Pittsburg State has already been so supportive, but if everyone can all band together as a small town university, this will be possible! Also, all of our friends and family have flooded in prayers and responses to this news. If everyone pulls together, it will alleviate just a small amount of weight off of our shoulders.

Through all the bad we have been through during this process, good has came as well. Robert and I have become closer to God. We both have struggling with trying to do things our own way. After Robert realized he had cancer, he started opening up about God and some revelations he had been thinking about for awhile. We strongly believe things happen for a reason. We aren't sure why this has happened to us, but we know that we cannot make it through this without leaning on God's strength and our loved ones!

Thanks for reading our story! God Bless!
