When your heart is functioning at 5%, it feels as if it is a race against time. My husband, Robert Sablan, was hospitalized for 7 days due to heart problems. Once he entered the emergency room on the first day, the nurses tended to him immediately because of his ill physical appearance. Later that night, the doctor had told him the bad news about his very weak heart.
The operation required to treat the blockages in Robert's arteries is called a coronary bypass surgery, in which the surgeon attaches a blood vessel taken from elsewhere in the body to the diseased heart artery, rerouting blood around the blockage in the same way a road detour re-routes traffic around road construction. A double, triple or quadruple bypass refers to the number of heart arteries that are bypassed.
The surgery carries many benefits, including some particularly for patients who have serious cardiovascular disease. The operation can save your life if you are having a heart attack or are at high risk of having one, which is Robert's case.
Since coronary bypass surgery must be done elsewhere, Robert seeks to get operated at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, California where he will be surrounded by family. The money will be used for airfare as well as off-island expenses needed during the trip.
