March 14th was supposed to be a good day, it was my Dad’s birthday. Around 9:00 am, my families lives were changed in seconds. Tommy looked out his kitchen window to see a neighbor yelling that the garage was on fire. He went to the garage to look and as soon as he opened the door, flames rushed into the house. My mom, Dani, was awoken to thick black smoke filling her bedroom. They quickly left the house, but realized the dogs were inside. They went back into the house to try to get them from the bedroom above the garage but couldn’t make it through the thick wall of smoke. Neighbors quickly called the fire department and the fire was put out in roughly 20 minutes. Their husky made it out of the house unharmed. Thankfully, the fire fighters were able to resuscitate the 3 year old golden retriever that was in the bedroom above the garage and he is now at the vet hospital. With the vet bill alone, they are looking at thousands of dollars of expenses. Unfortunately the other dog that was above the garage didn’t make it. She was a beautiful 1 year old golden retriever who was so full of love and had so much life left to live. My moms cat of thirteen years also didn’t make it out of the house. As far as the contents of the house, my parents lost everything they have ever worked for and countless memories and mementos from all of our lives. Three years ago they left Colorado to fulfill their life long dream of living in Charleston. Yesterday, they watched their dream home burn. The home that they couldn’t wait to retire in, see their grand children visit, and host their weekly Sunday night family dinners. Right now their biggest concerns are covering Coopers vet bills, the cremation of the lost pets, and various unforeseen expenses. Long term, they are looking at having to tear their house down to the studs, completely rebuild, and replace everything they had. We appreciate the love and concern of all the friends, neighbors, and family who have reached out to help in this terrible time in our lives.
