Robinson-Shuba Commemorative Statue Project

Tax deductible
Your donation can help make our important monument to racial equality a reality.

The Robinson-Shuba Commemorative Statue will celebrate the inspiring 1946 handshake of Jackie Robinson, the first African American allowed to play in mainstream professional baseball, and George “Shotgun” Shuba, his white teammate. The handshake occurred after Robinson hit a home run in his debut game and the two teammates who scored on the homer didn’t stop at home to greet him. Shuba, the on-deck batter, noticed that, so he stepped up to shake Robinson’s hand in what has been called “a handshake of the century.”

The statue will be dedicated on Saturday, July 17, in Wean Park in downtown Youngstown.

Our fund-raising efforts are led by the Robinson-Shuba Commemorative Statue Committee and its fiscal agent, the Economic Action Group, a downtown Youngstown development advocate serving as fiscal agent.
