Rocheport Christian Church Annex Repairs

Historic Church Needs Your Help.

The Rocheport Christian Church is located in Rocheport, MO (population 249).  Rocheport is a historic town that includes many buildings listed on the U. S. National Register of Historic Places.  Two of those buildings are the Rocheport Christian Church sanctuary and the Rocheport Christian Church annex.

The Rocheport Christian Church formally organized in 1837 when a group of settlers met around a flatbed hay wagon.  The congregation built a church building in 1845 and it is the oldest Christian church building in continuous use west of the Allegheny and Appalachian Mountains.  It may even be the oldest building in continuous service among all Christian churches nationwide (it has been rumored, but not confirmed, that the previous recordholder is no longer in operation).  Our church was selected as the Missouri Rural Church of the Year in 2015.

The annex building was built in 1910 and was originally the People's Bank.  The building was donated to the church and has been used for Sunday School classes and social events of the church.  This building was described in the nomination form submitted to the U. S. National Register of Historic Places as having the most outstanding example of brickwork in Rocheport with splayed lintels and ornamental cornice.

Unfortunately, since we are a small-town church, we have a small congregation and the expense of maintaining these older buildings is a struggle.   Major repairs were performed on the church building around 2007.   Now our annex is in need of repair.

The annex needs a new roof and the brick facade needs tuckpointing. Both of these are major expenses.  This is not the end of the problems, however.  There has been substantial damage to the interior of the building because of the leaking roof and water coming in around the bricks.

We desperately want to save our annex!  It continues to play an important role in our church activities as well as being a beautiful, historic building that is located in the heart of downtown Rocheport.

We view the project as a three-phase process.  The first phase would be to raise approximately $20,000 to replace the roof.  The second phase is to raise another $20,000 for the tuckpointing work.  Once the interior of the building is safe from the elements, the final phase will be to repair the damage that has been done to the interior of the building.

We would greatly appreciate it if you can help us toward our goal of rehabilitating our church annex.  Any donation will help make an impact.  Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to us
