Relief for Rockbridge Families

Tax deductible
Dear W&L Generals,

This weekend’s blizzard will impact an estimated 30 million people on the East Coast. We are expecting up to 28 inches of snow in Lexington alone! At worst, a few snow days might be a little inconvenient for us. We probably won’t be able to leave our home, dorm, or fraternity or sorority house for a day or two. But if any of us are stuck, we’ll probably have a good bed, warm clothes, and a comfortable room stocked with the last remnants of bread and milk in the county.

I just spoke with Mary Brown, the Executive Director of Rockbridge Area Relief Association  (RARA) in Lexington, and I asked what RARA needs most in order to support the less fortunate members of our small community this weekend. RARA primarily functions as a food pantry, but because of the anticipated road conditions the pantry will be closed this Saturday. RARA does not have a shelter, but when three local homeless families reached out to RARA for help, RARA put each of them in motel rooms for this week.

Mary said RARA's immediate need is paying for each of these three motel rooms so that these families have a warm place to wait out the snowstorm. Each room is $300 for this week, for a total of $900 for these three families this week. I am asking each member of our W&L community to donate a few dollars—the equivalent of a latte, beer, or Cookout tray—to support these three families and the sacrificial and dedicated work of RARA in Lexington. The first $900 donated will pay for these families’ motel rooms. Anything above and beyond this goal will be given directly to RARA to help these three families get back on their feet and to serve our local community.

If you want to find out more about or donate directly to RARA, you can do so here. Otherwise, please donate on GoFundMe so we can measure our progress and give as an entire student body. (The goal is set as $1,000 to account for the GoFundMe costs, but your gifts are tax deductable and the check will be mailed directly to RARA.) Thank you so much for giving. Every little bit helps and matters!

I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to a few days of snow! Let’s make sure our neighbors can enjoy it too.

Best,
