A Home For Rod Wilkins After Fire
Donation protected
Rod (Gary) Wilkins, our dad, woke up from a sound sleep in the middle of the night (Tuesday June 27, 2017) to a fire that was taking over his 40-foot boat he called home for nearly three years. We thank the gentleman who was brave enough to approach the boat and break a window after hearing our father calling out for help in between breaths. Armand, you saved our dad's life! You were the right person at the right place, and at the right time. After escaping his burning home, Dad was sent to the hospital for evaluation. Although he did not sustain burns to his skin he did suffer smoke inhalation and had to be seen in a critical care unit outside of Juneau. He is still in the hospital for medical assistance, and it will be awhile before he recovers enough to return to work.
At this time, we suspect this fire was no coincidence. Less than two weeks prior (sometime during the night) his vehicle was set on fire and found burned to the frame the following morning in the harbor parking lot. We are thankful for the individuals involved in the investigation and hope to ensure fellow Juneau residents do not experience such acts.
There are many words that come to mind to describe our father's strength, and resilience stands out the most. Starting over isn't new to him, and each time it gets a bit smoother, but now we would like to step in and lift him up higher. His words when describing how he felt about losing his home and all the belongings was, "it's just stuff." His detachment from material objects is an admirable trait. But also, his selflessness in everyday life.
What isn't easily replaced though is his home and I turn to you all and ask that if you feel called to please make a donation to our father. Your generous offering will go a long way.
You never expect something like this to happen to you or a loved one. It's been quite the journey so far and there is still a long road ahead. We appreciate every kind word, prayer, and deed.
