Roni Charme Memorial Fund

Donation protected
As many of you know, my brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Diane Charme, lost their adventurous, funny, and deeply caring 17-year old son, Roni, to suicide on August 8, 2016. In the wake of Roni’s death, it became clear that he was struggling mightily with the physical and emotional challenges of living with Type 1 diabetes. Despite his struggles, Roni embraced the fullness of life with a particular love of mountains, rivers, and wildlife.  Likening himself to a mountain goat, Roni brought liveliness and adventure to the world around him.  At the same time, Roni embraced fully and passionately his mission of caring for others.  There are many today who owe much to Roni.

I have started this fund to help Mike and Diane recoup some of the costs associated with Roni’s passing.  Really, though, there is a deeper and much more important reason - the love and compassion of friends and family.  My hope is that contributions from all of you will help transform the materialism of money into warmth, love, and compassion for Mike, Diane, and their children.

Please read below for more details.

Roni died in his family’s carThe car was totaled and Mike and Diane have since had to purchase a new car. They were able to find a used car that will allow them to safely drive the long distances needed to spend time with Roni’s brothers and sister, Jason, Britney, Cameron, and Zach. The cost of the car was $14,000.  My hope is that we can raise half the cost of the car.

Mike and Diane have started grief therapy.  Co-pays alone will cost them $500 a month.  I would love to be able to raise 6 months worth of grief therapy for them.

Roni’s funeral was a heart wrenching and profound testimony to a 17-year old who was wise and gentle beyond his years.  Funeral costs were $6000.  My hope is that we can raise half the cost of the funeral.

Should funds be raised beyond the $20,000 goal, the money will be used to fund the start up of a new organization that “grants wishes” to children with Type 1 diabetes.  No such organization exists and I intend to start one. In a nutshell, the mission of the organization is to help children with Type 1 diabetes and their families face the disease’s challenges by providing experiences that bring enduring happiness and confidence.  I have developed an outline of the organization if you would like to learn more.
