Our country is facing a humanitarian crisis that is affecting our local communities. At
the root of this crisis stands our homeless families. This crisis stems from various factors. At
this time, numerous programs are being launched to assist these vulnerable family
groups. We would like to briefly explain the causes which troubles our country. One of
the primary reasons families find themselves homelessness is the increasing cost of
housing. Many displaced families have one working parent. As housing costs rise while
at the same time wages remain static, parents find themselves unable to cover basic
housing expenses. In addition, the loss of employment by the primary wage earner can
immediately displace a family from stable housing. This is especially true if the family
has been living paycheck to paycheck. Another significant reason families find
themselves homeless is to escape domestic violence. Domestic violence accounts for
80% of women and children experiencing homelessness. It is believed that substance
abuse or mental illness is the primary reason for families facing this crisis, this is
inaccurate.
Since the youth in our country are vital to our future growth, it's essential to care for this
vulnerable population. Without stable housing, access to food, and proper support,
their education, overall health, and well-being are at risk. There are many federal and
state-level initiatives to address family homelessness; these programs prioritize getting
homeless individuals and families into stable housing quickly.
The National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH), founded in 1983, initially focused on
addressing the emergency needs of the growing homeless population. Recognizing
that homelessness was an ongoing issue, it shifted its efforts in 1987 towards long-term
solutions. Today, the NAEH has grown into a national network with over 10,000 partners
and is a notable advocate on homelessness. In 2000, it worked with communities to
develop plans to end homelessness, leading to increased federal resources. The NAEH
promotes key strategies such as permanent housing while using data-driven
approaches. This includes building knowledge through influencing policy based on
evidence, research, and enhancing community capacity through training and
technical assistance to providers and other agencies who team together on this issue.
