Roosevelt High School Rocket Fund

Hi, my name is Ben Bearre. I'm a Physics teacher at Roosevelt High School in Portland, Oregon.

Part of my goal as an educator is to have students use equipment to harness skills that aren't just Physics in my classroom. Along with this I desperately want to avoid asking students to use their phones for any purpose. Phones are invasive in our society and classroom. It is hard to be a teacher and talk to kids about phone use, the problems it causes, and the addiction many students have to this portal to the world they have on their hip at all times.

Therefore, I'm doing my best to avoid it, but have found that a few projects throughout the year (and Roosevelt High School 2 biggest and most time consuming projects) ask students to record various things with THEIR PHONES. No thanks on that. These projects ask students to build a device to protect an egg (classic, right!) and build rockets. They record their drops of the Egg Device and the launch of their rocket to calculate Acceleration and Force (for the egg devices) and Acceleration, Velocity, as well as Kinetic and Potential Energy (for the rockets).

I asked my school if we could acquire cameras, tripods, and SD cards specifically for the Physics team, but I was denied. For my class I estimate the cost to be about 200 dollars, but we have 3 Physics sections at Roosevelt High School. So I'm starting my goal at 1000, and every single dollar of that will go into the classroom. My estimate is roughly $855 for this equipment.

Equipment needed per class = 2 cameras @ roughly $50 a piece = $100/class (X3) = $300

2 tripods @ roughly $30 = $60/class(X3) = $180

Extra SD cards @ roughly $25(X3) = $75

4 SD to USBC card readers @ roughly $25 = $100(X3) = $300

Price/ Classroom = $285

The last one is because students use Chromebooks that SD cards don't just pop into.

I'm hoping to get these items on sale and not at list price, but we'll see on that. I also plan on matching this 1 dollar for every 5 dollars given (20%).

This equipment will be used at Roosevelt High School for years to come! Invest in our youth!
