Roots Theatre Co. - Dharavi Project
Donation protected
Hello! Welcome to Roots Theatre Company's 'GoFundMe' page. We are Erin, Brenna, Abi, Amy, Sophie and Julianna; Six students studying Drama, Applied Theatre & Education at The Royal Central School of Speech & Drama.
This Summer we will be traveling to Mumbai, for a month. Our team will be working in and around Dharavi, the world's 2nd biggest slum which accommodates around 1,000,000 people in just 1 square mile. We need to raise money for us to complete the projects we are taking part in. For the first project we have been given the opportunity to work with teachers aiming to integrate the arts into their school curriculum. We will be exploring the theme of inter-faith bullying due to the variety of faiths and religions within Dharavi, Mumbai. We will also be working within a small community with aims to create a piece of performance. In this experience we hope to exchange skills and share knowledge with the local communities in order for us to develop our facilitating skills. These projects are so important as they can help develop a participant's communication skills, understanding around a certain issue, group skills, and confidence. Drama can help bring communities together and can enable us to creatively express ourselves.
The money we raise will be used towards translators, visas, vaccines, workshop materials and equipment. Buying resources for our workshops and activities we have prepared is very important to ensure we can carry out our plans. We hope to utilize mask work within our project as many of our participants will not speak English, and so it is a great way to communicate non-verbally.
We are flying out on May 26th, so if you can give anything we would be very grateful. Even if you gave £1, it would still help us to be well on our way!
This project means so much to us as facilitators because it is an amazing experience we have worked so hard to get. This brilliant opportunity will teach us important skills that we will utilize within our individual pedagogy. Through this project we will learn valuable lessons about how to work within a different cultural background and community to the best of our ability. Acquiring these skills will give us the ability to further our careers working with many more amazing communities, to obtain knowledgeable experiences, and to provoke change by providing drama and by providing fun.
We would be tremendously grateful for any support you could offer us and we promise to use the money raised to create the best experience for everyone involved and achieve the goals we have been asked to reach.
Thank you so much,
Roots Theatre Company!
