Rocket Back to Success

Many students at Roper have fallen behind academically because of Covid-19 and its impact on their learning. Our goal is to help these students get back up to speed with the help of online learning resources.
With last year's spring semester cancelled and the many changes to learning this fall, it quickly became apparent to school staff that a large number of students are falling behind with their academic goals. The PTO Board decided to focus its efforts on helping all students who have fallen behind.
Testing done at the school has indicated that close to 25% of Roper students are currently behind academically in either reading or math. Our goal is to support these students as they "rocket back to success." Funds raised through this project will be used to purchase licenses for the online learning tools Lexia (reading) and Dreambox (math).
Lexia licenses cost $30 and Dreambox licenses cost $26, with 180 students needing to be served in both areas. The PTO's goal is to raise $10,000 so license fees can be covered for all students who are in need.
From Roper Principal Dr. Fuller: "In March, when we suddenly found out we were starting remote learning, Lexia and DreamBox, the companies who supply our computer-assisted intervention programs, made it possible for our students to have access to their programs free of charge. This was a great help to our teachers as they were able to gather important information from the programs to provide "just right" instruction to students based on their individual needs. This gave us an opportunity to learn first-hand how we could successfully use computer-assisted instruction to supplement our existing curriculum to provide extra assistance in reading and math.
Teachers will use curriculum data, along with other assessment information, to identify students they believe will respond well to this type of extra instruction. Teachers will monitor and support student levels closely and re-teach lessons when students are stuck. We are very excited about this opportunity to help us meet the needs of our students and make sure they all continue to Rocket Toward Success!" A benefit of purchasing the licenses now is that they do not expire until September 2021, so they will be available for both summer school and the beginning of next year's fall semester. If this fundraiser is successful and more than $10,000 are raised, excess funds will be used to purchase hand sanitizer, masks and kleenex for classrooms.
About the PTO: Roper Elementary PTO's mission is to support school staff in creating a safe and fun learning environment for all students as they "rocket toward success." After raising $25,000 last year for climbing walls in both school gyms, we set our sights on fundraising this year to upgrade equipment on the school's playgrounds. Then, Coronavirus happened. Like everything else, PTO's options to support the school and its students has been greatly restricted this year. We continue working hard to make this challenging year successful for students, teachers and families.
