Rory's Heart Worm Surgery (Caval Syndrome)
Donation protected
On 6/6/2020, Willis and I officially adopted our sweet boy Rory. We were unable to take him home from the shelter until 6/12/2020 when he was neutered. At this appointment, he also had general tests run and came back positive for heart worms. He also struggled greatly after being neutered with the surgery and symptoms of heart worms, and ended up going to the vet 5 times with some costly treatments in only 6 days. The shelter we got him from was unable to help provide any funding with this treatment or the heart worm treatment. However, Grand River Humane Society offered to pay for his entire heart worm treatment even though he did not come from their shelter!
Unfortunately, it turned out that his heart worms were left untreated for so long that it has developed into Caval Syndrome. This means that the worms have entered the right ventricle, vena cava, and atrium of his heart and are effectively preventing him from circulating blood properly. At some point they will completely block his hearts function. The only way to treat this is with an expensive surgery. The only facility in Colorado that does the surgery is Colorado State University's vet school, and they have given a rough estimate that the surgery will be about $4000 dollars, give or take depending on dog weight and other factors. This is unfortunately far outside of our budget and Grand River Humane Societies budget.
If he gets the surgery, he would still then need to complete the heart worm treatment which is about 6 months long and approximately $1600-2000 dollars.
There is a potential experimental medication we can try as well, although we have to talk to the vet more about it as it would effect his quality of life. This would be about $300 per treatment, but it sounds like he would need several months of it.
I was hesitant to make a go fund me as I do not want to create any false hope, but after much urging from others I have decided to give it a shot. Anything you can give to help this sweet boy would be greatly appreciated. I just want to give him a good life.
Rory was left abandoned in a local park about a month and a half ago. His background is completely unknown, but he is the sweetest dog I have ever met. He is incredibly well behaved and just wants cuddles and love. It breaks my heart that he may only be in my family for a short while, but I am determined that his remaining time will be of good quality.
