Rosalba, a friend in need

Hello, our names are Kris Thompson and Ericka Samaniego and we’re fundraising for financial help for our dear and beautiful friend, Rosalba, who has an auto immune disease called Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) that unfortunately has no cure. Rosalba is happily married and has two amazing twin boys who are currently attending El Paso Community College. At this time, a university is not feasible, financially.

Rosalba has a team of medical doctors in both El Paso and Dallas, who are working together searching for her best options. The day she found out she was sick, she was laid off from her 24-year career. Insurance is covering some of her expenses but there are others not included, such as some of her medications, tests needed for possible donors, and travel expenses to and from Dallas.

Initially, she spent a couple of months in Dallas, where they specialize in MDS. She’s undergoing many more tests in Dallas now, as they prepare her for a bone marrow transplant, hopefully in January or February. Several relatives are also being tested to see if they’re a transplant match. Her current medication side effects include major fatigue, body and muscle pain, yellowing of the eyes, and her skin is now charcoal in color.

MDS is a rare condition that occurs when the blood-forming cells in the bone marrow becomes abnormal or defective and has problems making new blood cells. Defective cells usually die faster than normal cells and the body also tends to destroy some already existing normal cells, leaving the person without enough red/white blood cells and platelets. Therefore, requiring a transplant.
