Hello! My name is Arrannè Paige-Rispoli. I am from Rochester, NY and I will be a rising junior at Canisius College this coming fall. I am a History/English double major and I also run cross country and track. You would know this if you've ever met my mother as the vivacious Rose Paige would seemingly begin each conversation with a list of my endeavors and accomplishments.

During my freshman year of college, my mother was diagnosed with stage four non-hodgkins lymphoma. She was given two weeks to live, which she did not inform me of until later, and it did not look promising. Her words to me as se lamented on the phone were: "Everything will be okay. I'll be fine."

I was in my second semester of college. I did not have a firm grasp of my own life and now I had to come to terms with losing my mother's.

She went to the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Zion, IL where she went through several rounds of chemotherapy.

It worked.

Cancer free, she had pulled off the
improbable. Only to be told a month later that the cancer had returned, even more aggressively .

No matter, she did not capitulate. She defeated cancer once more.

The elation was short-lived. The doctors suggested my mother undergo a stem-cell transplant in order to better guarantee the cancer would not return. My sister was a match for the transplant. The procedure was set for January 2015, one year after her initial diagnosis.

My mother worked through chemotherapy and up until her stem-cell transplant in order to pay for my college tuition.  She was assiduous in making sure I was taken care of.

The procedure was successful but the convalescence would prove to be lengthy.  My father remained by her side while I remained in college several states over in Buffalo, NY. What my father could not provide monetarily (he is on disability at age 62), he provided love, care and emotional support.

I had only informed my Coach of the ongoing circumstances as I had no. interest in commiserating. I wanted to focus on school. It was my of coping, I suppose.

From the surgery my mom caught an infection in February 2015 that was said to be normal in a stem cell patient. The infection is called BK Virus.

The doctors had controlled the BK Virus. Despite my mother losing nearly all of her kidney function and a majority of her kidney function, she would be getting discharged in late June 2015. She bought a chair with an umbrella over it as she would be sensitive to sun exposure. I was a bit agitated, reasoning that we could not afford trivial purchases. As she always has, she told me: "Don't worry about it, you'll be taken care of my son!"

I spoke to her on last on June 5th. She extended the conversation as much as she could. As a twenty year old without a lot of patience, I did the normal "Ok, alright, yep, I got it." Little did I know, things would go downhill very quickly. Complications from the BK Virus, what was thought to be controlled, put her in a very vulnerable position. Her bladder ruptured and that following Wednesday, the 10th, she underwent an emergency procedure. The surgeon gave her a slim chance of making it. She would bleed out, he asserted. She cannot clot.

Amazingly, she made it out of the surgery. Must be that tough Sicilian blood. Now, she finds herself with liver failure, kidney failure, and a complicated post-operation process. We are hoping for nothing short of a miracle.

Unfortunately, my mother could not keep up with the premiums for life insurance. She valued my college education too much to ask me to take a semester or two off which I now wish I did. Any contribution that you are willing to make would mean so very much to my family and I.

Your contributions will go towards my college tuition, bills, and if it comes to it, funeral expenses. My mother is a fighter, however, and I believe in my heart of hearts that she will make it! God willing, she will be back at home, there to bloviate about the world and lecture me about safety. I would like nothing more.

Thank you!
Arrannè
