Rotherham Special Care Baby Unit Refurbishment
Donation protected
Enhancing facilities for special babies at Rotherham Hospital:
As part of Fortem’s Annual Management Trainee Challenge the Northern team has chosen a project which will benefit babies and their families cared for by The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust.
The Special Care Baby Unit at Rotherham Hospital cares for premature babies or those with additional needs when they are born.
The Northern team will be working in collaboration with the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity and Trust colleagues to help renovate the ward to provide facilities above and beyond what the NHS is able to provide.
Our ambition is to provide facilities which will stand the test of time for generations of families to come.
Breastfeeding room:
These plans include creating a dedicated area for new mothers to breastfeed their baby. We will be transforming a large storage room into a calming, comforting and homely breastfeeding room. This will provide a private and comfortable home-from-home for parents to bond with their new-borns.
The ward layout currently provides a limited access to the fridges which contain milk expressed by mothers for their children. The fridges are located in a locked room which contains all the medicines and resources needed for the busy ward. Ward staff always need to be on hand to allow access. The new breastfeeding room will provide more independence for women and autonomy over their milk supplies, whilst still remaining secure.
Storage space:
In addition to a breastfeeding room, more adequate storage is top of the ‘wish list’ for staff on SCBU. This will be particularly important when the existing storage area will be transformed into a breastfeeding room.
Our ambitious plans include building an extension to the ward, which will then be used to store life-saving equipment and resources more effectively.
We will use a space currently used as a waiting area near the entrance to the ward to do this. The room will include a new sink and storage units.
How you can support the project:
Your support for the Northern team’s transformation project means you can help us to support the NHS and to make a big difference to families cared for at Rotherham Hospital. Every penny raised will help boost our project.
If you feel there are other ways in which you can support our project, including the donation of time, skills, materials or equipment please get in touch with the team via [email redacted].uk.
