Roupas de Samba de Roda

Donation protected
Hi, all! It's Borboleta here, and I am asking for your help.  As you probably know I love Samba de Roda, and its rich traditions and music, and have been studying it with Dona Nalvinha for many years now, and studied wtih Dona Biloca for serveral years before that. Both grew up dancing with Mestre Bimba's cultural show, and have Samba de Roda ingrained in their very beings!

On each trip to Bahia, I have one or two skirts made, so that I can have skirts for practice and for preformances here in the US. I personally pick the material, and there is a seamstress that I work with to have them each hand made. I have slowly, over the years, collected a nice variety of beautiful skirts, camisoles, panos de costa and panos de cabeca. These clothes are an important part of preserving the history and traditions of Samba de Roda from the Reconcavao (Bahia), and are clear legacies of the African roots of this amazing art. My work in Fort Worth includes several outreach programs with the city, with local schools, and with Girls, Inc, and in each of these programs I share the beauty of Samba de Roda and Bahian culture with the kiddos and local community.

In November 2016, I was at an event in Oakland, and was asked to bring my Samba de Roda clothes to help with a presentation, which I was very happy to do! We had a lovely presentation (the picture above is the last time we used the clothes!). However, after the event, the car I was in was broken into, and my bag with all of my Samba clothes was stolen. We searched the surrounding neigborhoods, but no trace of them was found.

I am hoping to raise some money to replace the skirts. Until I have replacements, I can no longer do presentations. While I continue to teach about Samba de Roda with the local youth in a number of outreach programs, the clothes really help bring the culture alive for the kiddos.

If you could make a small donation, it would be greatly appreciated. I lost 8 complete sets of Samba clothes, and replacing them will help me continue my work in the community!
