Rowe Elementary 5th Grade Springfield Trip

Our school, Rowe Elementary, is comprised of an amazing group of diverse students from all across Chicago. They come to school everyday with a smile on their face and ready to learn. Rowe is comprised of 1,009 students, 85% of which are low income. Unfortunately, many of our students have not had the privilege of traveling outside of the city and most have not stayed in a hotel. This experience, is often the highlight of the year. 

This year we have been teaching students about the importance of civic engagement and giving back to their school and community.  At the end of the year we will be taking an overnight trip to Springfield, Illinois, to learn more about our state’s history, and how government works to help its constituents.

In order to prepare for this trip, we will be doing a unit focused on civic engagement, involve scholars in fundraising (advocating for themselves and peers), and have speakers come in to speak more about the importance of civic engagement and supporting their community. 

As a community,  our goal is to raise $36,000 to send every one of our 120 5th graders to Springfield with no cost to them.
