Out of the Clear Blue Sky – Breast Cancer

In September 2016 my mom, Roxanne, was doing what most women over 40 do on a regular basis – getting her annual mammogram (side note, if you don’t already, PLEASE get your yearly mammogram… early detection is so important!). However, this time there was something different.  An abnormal mass was detected which led to further testing and a biopsy of a tumor that was determined to be a stage III, triple negative breast cancer.

Within two weeks, and a whirlwind of doctor appointments, my mom underwent a partial mastectomy,  which was supposed to be an outpatient procedure… but turned into a much more involved operation, as cancer was found in eight of her eleven lymph nodes (all were removed during surgery).

Next, her Oncologist ordered a PET scan (to detect where else the cancer may have spread). The PET scan was denied by her insurance company (even after her Oncologist called to explain why he believes this scan is needed now). She will start chemotherapy, followed by radiation. This is the beginning of a very unexpected journey... a four to six-month intense process to defeat this aggressive cancer.

My mom is a very loving, giving and strong woman, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, co-worker and caretaker. With the love and support of my dad, Roger, (married for 43 years) and her wonderful friends and family, she is remaining positive and will triumph over this cancer!
