The morning of Sunday, May 9th I woke up with a strange hard lump just below my ribs. By afternoon I'd been to urgent care and by that evening I was in the ER with an enlarged spleen and a ridiculously high white blood cell count, the following morning I was admitted for leukemia. Because this is a chronic cancer, I will have to take a pill every day for the rest of my life, and because this is America, that pill will cost me roughly $15,000 a month. Being self-employed and averaging an income of $16,000 a YEAR, but not qualifying for Medicaid (yay Texas!), that's going to be difficult to come up with to say the least.
