Youth Leadership Dollars 4 Scholars
Donation protected
Rena & Sophia were nominated by their amazing 3rd grade Math Teacher, Mrs. Jacqueline Harper, from Dunbar Elementary Magnet School, for the National Youth Leadership Forum: Pathways to STEM - an Envision program to be held at the University of Florida in Gainesville this Summer, 2017! ☀️
"When I read that I was nominated, I felt like something new had happened, and my hard work had finally paid off", Rena said after reading her nomination letter. "I'm so happy my sister was nominated too!"
The girls giggled a little when they read that they were recognized as students who already demonstrate "exceptional maturity, scholastic merit, and leadership potential, even at her young age" (I think the giggling was a little bit of sweet embarrassment). The fancy envelopes with the gold seal made them feel super special too.
Pathways to STEM is designed to give future leaders like Rena & Sophie an "unprecedented opportunity while still in elementary school to discover their personal strengths and to begin to acquire the leadership and life skills needed for academic and career success".
So, why are Rena & Sophie asking for "Dollars 4 Scholars"? This once in a lifetime opportunity comes with tuition, room & board. The curriculum, including forensic science, engineering & robotics, and human anatomy, was developed by some of the most highly-qualified educators, scientists, doctors, engineers and other professionals in conjunction with Discovery Education.
Although there is a limited number of spots, both Rena & Sophia were accepted. Their tuition, room, meals, curriculum, supervision, instruction, activities, program materials and more cost:
$2,195 per child = $4,390 total
While we can pay for some of it, we need some help. Both girls are applying for scholarships by writing an essay on what they want to do when they grow up, or what career they want and why. Unfortunately very few scholarships are given out, and are only for a maximum of 30% of tuition. So they also wanted to try to raise some money this way, but asked me to write it.
Any donation will help. Both girls have been doing incredibly well in school. They are both in the gifted program, and they have had straight A's all year long. They have been on the Principal's Honor Roll every quarter for the past 7 quarters!! This is an opportunity they both deserve to have and we desparately want to give them! Please help us further invigorate their natural curiosity to learn and discover!
Both girls are very involved with the school's musical program. Rena is President of the Orff Ensemble (xylophone), and made it into Honors Orff for Hillsborough County, one of only 24 other students.
Both girls are in Chorus, and Rena frequently sings the solos. They both participate in the Little Kids Rock Band where Rena sings solo and plays keyboard, while Sophie sings, dances, plays keyboard, and guitar.
Rena is President of the Principal's Council which is a group of 4th and 5th graders who meet regularly to brainstorm ideas to make their school a better place, to increase attendance rates, to stop bullying, and to have fun while learning.
Rena even scored a perfect 360 on her Math FSA, receiving a plaque with a letter from the Governer.
Both have been Terrific Kids of the Month, bumper stickers and all!
We are so excited that they have been nominated for this amazing opportunity with the National Youth Leadership Foundation: Pathways to STEM.
Don't know what STEM is? A STEM education includes a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics - fields that are widely considered to be essential to the United States future success and competitiveness in the global marketplace.
These fields will help produce the next generation of innovators, doctors, scientists, software developers and engineers. This program, National Youth Leadership Forum: Pathways to STEM gives Rena & Sophie the opportunity to have fun with science while learning more about these exciting fields.
Thank you!!!!
