Donation protected
We are currently crowdfunding for our short film, RUDE BOYS.
Logline
A young lad's newly shaved head turns a mundane day into an adventure for him and his friends.
Synopsis of Film
Keefer’s objective for the day is to call for his mates, smoke a stolen cigarette and spend 50p - without being asked too many questions about his newly acquired shaved head. Wearing his dad’s braces and a couple of Two Tone badges, he reinvents himself as a Ska Rude Boy. But challenges arise as Keefer navigates his friends through the day, without telling them the real reason why he’s shaved his head.
RUDE BOYS is a coming-of-age saga, where music and finding your tribe, overrides any sense of repression amongst this resilient, fun-loving collective.
Call To Action
We have self-funded enough money to start production but we need a little more help. We are shooting on 18th-22nd of May on location in North County Dublin. We need your support to raise a little more money, as everyone on the crew is a student. Every penny that you can donate would mean that this project so dear to our hearts can be made. Each donation will be thanked in the credits and any donation over €100 will be credited as executive producer. We would love to have you as apart of this community project. As a team, we complete understand if you are not able to donate at this time, but anything you can do, such as sharing this on social media or to any of your group chats, would be much appreciated.
A message from the Director - Campbell Gibson
I grew up in a house where movies, music, and storytelling where a part of everyday life. My parents, are 60’s kids who met in the 1980’s and so I was seeped in cultural reference from this era. The Breakfast Club and The Goonies, were go to family films and so nostalgic coming-age films was my first introduction to my obsession with film. From a young age I was subjected to my parents back catalogue of vinyl, CDS and cassette tapes. Music was the backdrop to every occasion. Ska was a massive part of their shared love of music. Sunday nights are especially memorable to me. My mam would be cooking roast chicken, drinking wine and recounting endless stories from back when she was out and about. My dad, me and my sister dancing to The Specials and Madness in the kitchen. So when my mam came up with the idea for a short film, with a Ska tribute, I knew I wanted to make this film.
Initially inspired by her childhood days calling for friends, listening to the radio, messing about on wasteland near her housing estate and inevitably getting up to mischief - Rude Boys is a moment in time of 3 lads and a new girl on the block.
The story speaks to multiple generations, bringing a sense nostalgia of the joys of youth. Our goal of this film is to just have fun. From the people involved in making it - to the people who get to watch it.
When I showed the script to Hana (the producer) and my potential crew, the support and love for this project was inspiring. They have put so much effort in already and can’t wait to see what else they can do with your help.
A message from the Writer - Veronica
I love to write for fun and my son, Campbell loves film. But never did I imagine that we’d collaborate on a script. The Rude Boys script developed from lots of late-night conversations about our love of coming-of-age films. I was always coming up with scenarios and telling Campbell to notebook them and one night he said, “Write one Mam and I’ll make it”. I’d never screen written before, so with Campbell’s help, I downloaded a screenwriting app and a couple of days later finished my first draft of a short film script, Rude Boys.
At this stage, it was a very rough draft and I had no experience with script writing. But with lots of hand-holding from Campbell about the technicalities of script requirements and how he envisioned the story from a director’s point of view, we crafted a draft we thought could work.
Once the characters developed, we wanted to capture a theme of simple nostalgia, with a narrative of tribe, community and humour. And of course, the 80’s, for me was all about the music. I loved and still love Ska. So does Campbell. So it was a huge inspiration when creating the world.
I was overwhelmed by all the crew's enthusiasm. I can’t believe, that with your help and support, they are now going to make Rude Boys. It's a privilege, that at my age (57) I’m a small part of such an amazing group of young filmmakers.
