Run Around Oahu 2016
Tax deductible
For the third time since 2013, Marines based at Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii will embark on a roughly 135 mile loop run around the island of Oahu to raise money for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund. This year's run will take place on 3-4 June and is a regular staple for the Marines selected to participate.
The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund was chosen because as Marines, we have an obligation to take care of our own and the timing of the original event placed it near the official Marine Corps Birthday of November 10th. Originally, the event was scheduled near this historic day and paired with this particular charity to make this an especially personal event to the active duty Marines participating. The 2015 Run Around Oahu was cancelled due to operational committments so the 2016 campaign will occur following Memorial Day instead.
The innaugural run was designed to cover a minimum of 238 total miles to commemorate the Marine Corps' 238th Birthday.
Since Oahu's outer loop is roughly 135 miles, the run participants will run in pairs to accumulate total mileage in one round trip. The total mileage run by everyone collectively exceeded 250 miles and took just under 22 total hours to complete. The following year's run was nearly identical in time and distance. The 2016 campaign should cover roughly 270 total miles.
Each pair will run a three mile leg before swapping out with the next pair. This approach allows the runners to rest properly and ensures everyone will run nearly the same amount of total mileage for their portion of the challenge. Going off little sleep and having multiple three mile legs to run, the Marines participating will have a significant endurance challenge ahead of them. With the support of friends, family, and most importantly, our donors, these Marines are ready to take the challenge head on to benefit our injured brothers and sisters.
Thank you all so much for your support, Semper Fidelis!
