Running for Durham Samaritans

We're from Durham University's Marketing and Communications Team, and we're doing the Durham City Run to raise money for Durham Samaritans.

Samaritans is a charity dedicated to reducing feelings of isolation and disconnection that can lead to suicide.
Last year, they responded to a call for help every six seconds - that's almost 15,000 a day. There are 201 branches, and over 20,000 volunteers.

Durham Samaritans, based on Sutton Street, has 70 volunteers, including University students, alumni, and current and retired staff.
The branch supports the Listening programmes in Low Newton and Durham prisons, provides training and support for the University's Nightline volunteers and gives outreach talks at local schools, colleges, businesses and community groups.
Volunteers also get involved with events including the Durham Miners' Gala, Durham Pride and the Great North Run.

Between July 2017 and August 2018, they answered:
18,323 phone calls
1,477 emails
2,455 text messages
And met 36 visitors face to face.
