Running the distance from Aldershot-Whiston
On the 6th of November, my son (Arthur Tony) was born via emergency c-section at 38 weeks, after a consistent reduction of movements from 34 weeks. He was born not breathing and spent 32 hours on oxygen in the special baby unit. His placenta had begun to deteriorate and he had a cord gas supply problem. The placenta had a matter of days before it would have completely stopped working.
My wife experienced significant postpartum complications, spending a prolonged period of time in the hospital suffering from a severe c-section wound infection. This resulted in two maternity intensive care admissions due to the development of sepsis which later resulted in heart failure. She continued to have an open wound for an additional 10 weeks going back into theatre in February.
The signals platoon of the grenadier guards between themselves will be running the equivalent distance from Lille Barracks in Aldershot to Whiston Hospital in Liverpool approximately 220 miles to fundraise for Tommys, approximately 13 miles each in a 24 hour period. Tommy's exists to save babies lives because right now in the UK one in four women loses a baby during pregnancy or birth, which funds research into why pregnancies can end so devastatingly and have a campaign on the importance of counting kicks. Something that if we ignored, it is likely we wouldn’t have our son with us today!
