Running The Gambia - Project Gambia (Feeding Children)

Hi, my name is Ryan. In February I will be travelling to The Gambia, one of Africa's most deprived countries, in an attempt to run across the entire country from bottom to top!

The Gambia is one of the poorest countries in Africa with roughly 50% of families living in poverty. Meaning children often attend school unfed and malnourished. I will be doing this run to raise money for Project Gambia's School Feeding Programme.

Project Gambia is a non-profit charity helping some of the poorest children in The Gambia, The programme provides schools meals for over 500 children at St Peters’ and Wisdom Nursery Schools. These schools serve very poor communities. Many of the children arrive at school hungry because their families do not have enough income to provide the bare minimum food required.

The programme provides these children with a daily nutritious meal, ensuring their attendance at school and safeguarding them from the risks of being on the streets. A donation of:

£2 provides a school meal each day for a month for one child.

£10 provides a school meal each day for a month for 5 children.

£20 provides a school meal each day for a month for 10 children.

£24 provides a school meal each day for a year for one child.

The route I am planning will be roughly 80km. It will be split into 2 days of roughly 40km a day with weather averaging over 30 degree Celsius in February. Day 1 will start on the southern border with Senegal and finish somewhere around Kotu beach. Day 2 will start from where day 1 ended. I will have to enter the capital Banjul and get a boat over the river Gambia to Barra then run up the coast to the northern border with Senegal.
