Running the NYCRuns Half-Marathon
Tax deductible
Hey, it's me. On April 27th, I'm running the NYCRuns half-marathon and raising money for Girls for a Change and the DAUGHTERS Impact Campaign.
A few months ago, I saw the documentary 'Daughters' and was instantly touched. 'Daughters' tells the story of four young girls and their incarcerated fathers in the Dance with Dad Program created by Girls for a Change in conjunction with a fatherhood program in a Washington D.C. jail.
It's an incredible story about how families are impacted by incarceration (both in and out of prison), and the programs created to work with families on the outside as well as community and therapy groups within the prison system. The program culminates in a prom-like Father/Daughter dance at the prison wherein both the fathers and the daughters undergo a makeover/styling to spend a day together. The whole journey is moving and heartbreaking; I was shocked to learn about the declines in recidivism for those who took part- and ultimately the actions that can be taken to improve a family's chances.
This money is being raised for an Impact Campaign for DAUGHTERS- raising money to do screenings in prisons and to replicate the Dance with Dad Program across the U.S, hosted by Girls for a Change.
Girls for a Change is a nonprofit youth development organization that focuses on empowering Black girls in Central Virginia.
