Jennifer was diagnosed with cancer in June of 2018. She immediately began treatment at the Cancer Treatment Center in Philadelphia, PA. In July of 2018 she under went a 13 hour surgery where they removed the inside of her left cheek and jaw bone. They rebuilt the area with tissue & muscle from her stomach. She then had 6 weeks of chemo & radiation treatments and the cancer was gone!
Although the cancer was gone, her mouth would not heal from the surgery.  She has had to return to Philadelphia for 8 additional surgeries on her mouth due to infections.  The doctors tried many medications and treatments all of which were unsuccessful. The last resort was for Jennifer to undergo hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which she very reluctantly agreed to after many scans and test showing there was no cancer in her body. She completed the first 30 treatments successfully, her mouth finally began to heal! The doctors decided she needed to do an additional 30 treatments to complete the healing process.
Unfortunately this is where things took a really bad turn...as if she hadn't already been through enough. She got through 5 more treatments when she discovered a hole in her chin (literally!). Her doctors told her to get back to Philadelphia immediately, she returned on June 7, 2019. By the time she got to the hospital, her throat was swollen and she was struggling to breath.  She underwent another surgery to clean out infection and put in a breathing trach. At that point the doctors discovered not only was the cancer back but it had spread throughout her face, chest and into her lungs.
They had to wait for her white cell count and PH level to increase before they began 5 aggressive (24 hours a day for 4 days!!) rounds of chemo treatment.  After 2.5 weeks of being back in the hospital, she was able to begin the chemo. It was a rough 4 days (again, as if she hadn't been through enough) but she was able to complete the first round of treatment.
After being in the hospital for 21 days,  with Rusty by her side, she was finally able to come home with the trach still in for swelling as well as a pain pump.
The plan is for her to return to Philadelphia on July the 8th for her second round of chemo treatments.
As I am sure you all can imagine, this entire ordeal has taken a toll on Jennifer and Rusty, not only physically and emotionally but also financially.  They went from a dual income family to a single income when Jennifer had to stop working (doctors orders) prior to her first surgery in July of 2018. Rusty has tried juggling work and being by Jennifer's side in PA. He exhausted all of his paid time off in July of last year for her original surgery and follow ups.  Although the company he works for has been great allowing him to take the time off to be by his wife's side, his time off is unpaid. Over the last month of this ordeal Rusty has not left Jennifer's side therefore, they have had no income.
Not only do all of their regular bills keep rolling in but they also have the expense of traveling back and forth to Philadelphia for her treatments and follow ups.
This is where we are asking you all for any financial assistance, prayers, positive vibes and whatever else you believe in. No amount is too small...seriously.  We are hoping and praying to help alleviate at least the financial stress of this situation so Rusty and Jennifer can focus on her healing.
