Ruth Santiago and family Sunnyside apartment fire

By now, most have heard the terrible news - on December 20 a 6th floor apartment fire in Sunnyside has affected so many families. Among them, my best friend Ruth Santiago and her family who have called the building home for decades have now been tragically forced to find a new home.

Just days before Christmas, their entire family lost everything and had to leave two apartments behind and start over. Ruth, her mom Loida, and brother Carlo are faced with the daily reminder that their family heirlooms, photos, clothes, and other possessions are gone.

The Santiago family has called Sunnyside home for 35 years - a beautiful and culturally rich community that continues to show why so many find it incredibly special. Ruth and her family hope to call it home again soon.
