Honoring Ruth Lorras, to the Medical Staff of LIJ
Donation protected
In honor of our loving mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and beacon of strength, Ruth Lorras born on October 19th, 1939.
At 4:14 PM on Easter Sunday, April 12th, 2020, Ruth Lorras joined her beloved husband, Emanuel Theodore Lorras, and children, Rodrigo & Jacqueline, in heaven. She succumbed to complications related to the novel Coronavirus. She was welcomed to heaven's gates by her children Rodrigo & Jacqueline who also passed away on Easter Sunday, over 40 years ago.
Our mother, Ruth, had many inspiring qualities of which her incredible strength, love and generosity always stood out. For this reason, it would be our family's privilege to honor Ruth by creating a fund in her name to support the medical professionals at Northwell's Long Island Jewish Medical Center. In the past 9 days of care, without her family present to comfort, incredible acts of love and kindness were displayed by the nursing staff also enduring immense challenges only to be overcome by their admirable strength, all of which embodies our mother. This generosity will lead to providing medical professionals with much needed hydration packs, hand lotions and protein bars. We will also explore purchasing iPads & iPhones to allow families to communicate with their loved ones. Leaving Ruth's iPhone with her became a benefit we did not expect, enabling frequent and immediate communication and allowed us to gather 28 of her closest family members from Ecuador and New York to say our final goodbyes on a group FaceTime chat. We greatly appreciate your generous donation in her name.
In order to fully appreciate Ruth's strength, I wanted to share with you examples of her perseverance which she inspired in the lives of those around her.
In the early 1970's, with a young family in her native Quito, Ecuador, upon discovering her youngest son, Michael, required expensive surgery to be performed, she set out to the United States of America to earn enough money for this procedure, without knowing anyone. Our mother would find herself working at a factory for 12 hours a day over the next few years until tragedy struck. She lost two of her four children, Rodrigo (13 years old) & Jacqueline (14 years old), in an accident on a farm. Although this would forever bring pain, she persevered and brought Michael & Patricia to the US to attend high school, then college to achieve better opportunities.
During this time, she met the love of her life, Emanuel Sr., and would later go on to remarry. At the age of 45, Ruth gave birth to Emanuel Rodrigo Lorras Jr which represented a miraculous occasion aiding to fill the void left by Rodrigo & Jacqueline. Our mother's greatest joy was to please her family, supporting many in Ecuador, while providing the best quality of life for her family here in New York. All the while, continuing to work at the factory, which Emanuel ran, for the better part of 4 decades.
After 7 years of retirement, Ruth was diagnosed with a brain tumor performed in 2003 at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, coincidentally. During this high risk procedure, Ruth suffered a mini-stroke and soon began an arduous 6 month rehabilitation. She recovered with minor ailments in motion, however her mind was sound and she again persevered passed these continuing to run the household, and becoming a primary caretaker of her husband as he declined in health in his later years.
Despite what might seem as insurmountable obstacles, Ruth lived a very fulfilling life with family that adored her dearly. She provided nothing short of absolute love for each of her children, her brothers, her sisters, grand children including the most recent joy of her life, her great grand daughter Lexi, and all her nephews and nieces that would regularly visit in New York City and of course Pickle, Kitty & Adelaide - our family's pets. She married her true love, and both shared a passion for one another that are only written love stories. She raised three loving children who without question attribute their strength and tenacity to her influence as a mother, and ultimately share a deep love for family following the example set by Ruth.
While this moment in time may bring great sadness, through Ruth's example, we persevere past this channeling this energy aiming to help those who help us, honoring our loving mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and beacon of strength.
Love,
Manny, Patricia, Michael, Terri & Lexi
