Ms. Hunt knows from first hand about pain and suffering. She was born with a genetic disability called Sickle Cell Disease. This is her story:
IT’S IN THE BLOOD
I can remember the age of six in the doctor’s office at Michael Reese hospital in Chicago, Illinois when the test results were in and the doctor told my mother and me that I had sickle cell disease (SCD). I looked up at my mother from leaning on her lap and said what that is? She replied let’s listen to doctor and hear what he has to say. As he began to explain how SCD is a hereditary blood disease and the genes in my body came from a gene each from my parents that gave me the disease. He then added that it was predominately an African American disease and the life span was not long; for some they never live pass twenty years of age. I could tell my mother had no idea what SCD was and how my dad and she could have gone through their whole lives and not known that they both carried a gene that could potentially be fatal to their baby girl. I knew then that I wanted to learn more about African America people and relationships
My family dynamics was not of an academic background. My father did not know how to read or write, only spelt his name. My mother graduated from high school and went to trade school and became a cosmetologist. The messages I received as a child from my environment was "do the best you can to survive, be content and take care of your family." It wasn’t until almost thirty (30) years later, I decided to return to school after a bad devoice, living with my sisters and feeling lost and depressed. I was on the couch watching the Tara Banks Talk Show. She had a couple on there that was having problems and introduced a sex therapist/sexologist. I was surprised, I never heard of such a thing. From my early interest of African Americans and relationships, I knew that sex issues had a lot to do with many failing relationships especially in the Black community, sex topics are taboo and sexual situations should never be talked about. I guess that is why my parents never knew when they produced a child, it was a possibility that the child would be born with sickle cell disease. Never having these conversations is a blessing and a curse in some ways. One, I would not be hear and two, the pain I have to endure. The show had me curious now, how can I help people like that sexologist did on Tara Bank’s show? I made up my mind right then and there that I was going back to school.
After completed some general courses I was accepted into Pitzer College through the New Resource Scholarship program that paid for my education. As mentioned earlier, I then graduated and worked as an intern for two years, As of September 12. 2015, I was accepted into The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. I am so excited!!. "This is it!" as Michael Jackson last tour was titled. As a result this fall 2015-2016 school year will use up the bulk of what financial aid I have left to draw on. However, it is not enough for my books, training. conferences, materials, fees, as etc. Also, I do not qualify for the grand plus loan until much later. I am doing all I can to ensure that I will complete my academic journey by doing such things as applying for scholarships, the work study program, and the creation of this account. Your support, from my friends, my family, associates, colleagues, businesses and the public. I reach out to you. It is in my blood to be a servant to the community. I appreciate your contribution in advance.
