Rwanda Coding Workshops

Hello! My name is Amy Isvik. I am a current PhD student in computer science at NC State University. This September I will be traveling to Rwanda to undertake a 9-month Fulbright research project to assist local secondary school teachers with incorporating computing into their math and science classes. As part of my community outreach while in Rwanda, I plan to host a coding club for local students and when possible, travel to other areas in the country to host shorter workshops. During the coding club, students will learn and see computer science in action through the use of a combination of Finch and Sphero Mini robots. This allows beginning students to practice coding concepts through block-based coding and for more advanced students to code in Python, Java, and JavaScript. My goal is to host at least two programming workshops a month, teaching 20-25 students at each workshop. In total, I hope to provide computer science education to over 400 students through these workshops. My fundraising goal is to provide a classroom set of each robot (25 Finch robots and 25 Sphero Mini robots), but donations of any size are welcome for these coding workshops as they would help reduce the robot-to-student ratio and allow the students to have more focused time working on their programming skills. Donations to this fundraiser will be used for laptops, Finch robots, Sphero Minis, and other classroom materials.

A donation of $150 provides a Finch robot

A donation of $50 provides a Sphero robot

A donation of $10 provides 2 wall adapters for charging the robots

Donations may also be used for other items such as storage cases for robots and coding books
