Building Jobs and Community in Rural Rwanda
Donation protected
On May 3, 2023, communities in Northern and Western Rwanda experienced catastrophic flooding. As of the evening of May 3, at least 129 people were known to have died with many more still missing and rescue missions underway. Thousands upon thousands of people have lost their homes, businesses, and livelihoods. Roads and sanitation infrastructure have collapsed and basic resources are limited by supply, funds, and distribution.
Imagine this happening in your community. Now imagine this happening where nobody has home or property insurance and your government doesn't have the tax base to offer a social safety net. The Rwandan government is responding to this emergency through search and rescue as well as setting up shelters to support people who have lost homes and family members.
However, rebuilding communities is going to take far more resources than what exists within the country.
We are asking for your help with financial aid. This money will be administered through the Muhasuka Cultural Centre, a social enterprise that builds economic opportunities for vulnerable women and youth in Vunga and Shyira Villages of Nyabihu District (one of the regions hardest hit). Funds will go towards rebuilding the Muhasuka Cultural Centre, rebuilding homes and basic infrastructure, and purchasing equipment to revive sewing/embroidery, homesteading, and tourism occupations.
- $10,000 can rebuild the Muhasuka Cultural Centre
- $3000-5000 can build a community WASH station
- $1000 can repair up to 10 homes still standing but inhabitable
- $00 can buy new sewing equipment and training for more than 10 women to resume livelihood activities
- $200 can support a family's basic needs, health insurance, and school fees for a month
- $20 can buy a new charcoal stove or a week's worth of veggies, rice, and beans for a family
- Any amount puts a smile on the face of community members who know that you care
You can also purchase Rwanda Strong merchandise at the Muhasuka Cultural Centre's online store, with all proceeds going to community development.
Help us help Rwanda rebuild the way the community knows best!
