Spera Memorial Garden
Donation protected
Krista "Kitty" Spera was a life-long resident of Roxborough (Philadelphia, PA). Shee attended IHM elementary school, Hallahan High School, and Chestnut Hill College where she earned her degree in Elementary/Early Childhood Education. She was employed by the School District of Philadelphia for 21 years, the last five of which were teaching Kindergarten at Shawmont Elementary School.
Krista was always inspried by the colros of nature and was an accomplished gardner. Her back yard garden included successful crops of tomatoes, sunflowers, cucumbers and corn. She incorporated "growing" into her classes and always had prize winning drawings of "gifts of nature" hanging in her classroom.
She loved the Shawmont Community Garden that was begun several years ago by the 8th grade class. She would always volunteer to help maintain the garden over the summer months. She was connected to the environement and nature in a special way and was able to share with her students nature's importance for today and the the future.
Shawmont School lost Mrs. Spera in August, 2015 after a battle with breast cancer. The school community would like to re-dedicate it's community garden in memory of Mrs. Spera to the "Krista Spera Memorial Garden".
We have rasied some funds through other sources for soils, plants, and the other items needed to maintain the garden. We would like to add a plaque and a memorial bench where our students and families can enjoy the garden, fresh air, and at the same time remember what a wonderful person Mrs. Spera was.
Thank you from all Shawmont Students and Families!
