Ryan Hammond Medical Expenses

Tragic Accident

On Sunday, November 24th, life suddenly changed and took an unexpected twist for Ryan due to a tragic car accident.  After leaving his part-time job at Walmart at 10:45pm, he hit black ice and his car flipped over twice leaving him with three fractured vertebrae in his neck and severe neurological injuries with a long rehabilitation and recovery to be able to use his hands and walk again.  Ryan wears a neck brace 24/7 to support his neck and preserve the vertebrae that underwent surgery. He has very limited use of his legs and hands.

He had to be cut out of the car and airlifted to Geisinger Hospital in Scranton, PA and he is now at Kessler Rehabilitation Center in New Jersey, where he undergoes Physical and Occupational Therapy  throughout the day.  He is extremely lucky to be alive and faces a long road ahead of him.

Life in Rehabilitation

Ryan needs full time care. He is currently unable to perform even the basic of functions without the assistance of family or medical staff. Ryan's complete loss of mobility means that even such tasks as feeding himself are impossible. Due to his inability to move even when in discomfort, he needs to be repositioned in his bed every 2-hours to avoid bed sores. Ryan's aides and parents help to bathe and dress him. And other tasks such as leaving the hospital bed can only be done with the assistance of a hydraulic lift.

Mounting Expenses

The unexpected nature of this situation has begun to take a drastic toll on the family's savings and finances. In the short few weeks alone, there have already been thousands of dollars of out-of-pocket costs with many more additional costs ahead. Kessler Rehab is a 3-hour round trip drive from the Hammond's home. Ryan's parents Ed and Laura take turns alternating overnight stays with Ryan because he is a minor. The mounting transportation costs are taking a huge toll on his father and mother.

It’s not entirely clear how long he will be able to remain at Kessler and his family has begun to prepare for his return home and all the changes and challenges that will be necessary for him to function on a daily basis. These changes include making their home as accessible as possible to meet his needs.

The house needs to be completely retrofitted to accommodate handicap accessibility. Ramps will need to be installed, at an estimated cost of $10,000. A stair lift will need to be installed, with an estimated cost of $11,000. Also, a handicap accessible bathroom needs to be built with an estimated cost of tens of thousands of dollars.

More About Ryan

Rather than enjoying his senior year in High School as a seventeen year old and preparing for College/Vocational School, he is in the fight of his life to regain his personal independence and do the basic things that we often take for granted such as walking, writing, texting, feeding/dressing yourself and all the other tasks of self care.

Prior to the accident, Ryan was an adventurous, outgoing teen. He was loyal and dedicated to his friends and enjoyed the outdoors. Ryan loves snowboarding and was actively involved in the school’s ski and snowboarding program. Living in rural Pennsylvania, he enjoyed hunting with his father Ed. He was actively involved in his local Fire Company as a Junior Volunteer Firefighter. After graduation, his goal was to join the Air National Guard and learn to be a mechanic. It is with great hope that with the proper care and support, he will still be able to live out these dreams someday.

The Family

Ryan's family has been all-in since the moment the accident occurred. His mother, Laura, has taken an indefinite unpaid leave of absence from work to be with her underage son in rehab. His father, Ed, is a retired 100% disabled combat veteran who has sacrificed so much for his country.  He served in Desert Storm and did two tours in Iraq retiring as a First Sargent with over 35 years of active and reserve duty with the Marine Corp and Army receiving numerous medals of honor.  Ed also serves as a volunteer fire police captain and firefighter for Delaware Township Company 28 and was the Delaware Township Constable for the past 12 years.
