Ryde Golf Club Helping Dementia & IoW Search & Rescue

Hi. My name is Debbie and I’m raising funds to help beat the terrible disease that is Dementia. A disease that robs the sufferers of their memories, dignity and ultimately their lives. A disease that slowly but surely robs families of their loved ones in the most horrible of ways.

As part of my fundraising efforts I’m attempting to walk the circumference of the Isle of Wight in 3 days, starting at Ryde Golf Club on 31st May and finishing there on 2nd June (hopefully), as my mum did when she was about 34, unfortunately she couldn’t remember doing so because of her dementia. She sadly died on Christmas Eve last year but I’d already told her I was going to try and mimic her walk to raise funds for the Alzheimers Society and bless her at 87 she told me to go and buy her some new clothes and she would do it with me. She was only 5 1/2 stone at the time and didn’t have the strength to get out of bed on her own!

It’s a terrifying fact that 1 in 3 people born today will suffer with some form of dementia in their life. The money raised by your donations will help people affected get the support they need today, and funds the incredibly important research that is aimed at finding a cure for tomorrow.

The IoW Search & Rescue is a small Island Charity solely reliant on public donations that we are also raising funds for because they are often called upon to help search for people with Dementia that have gone missing. They also help with life saving searches for other vulnerable missing people, such as children and indeed anyone who, at the time of their disappearance is believed to be at risk of death or injury. So these two charities well work together.
