A Family of 5 Caught in House Fire

On Tuesday, January 3, writer and journalist Brooklyn White’s home caught on fire while she, her husband, their 1-year-old son, and her grandmother, were inside. While the family escaped the dwelling without physical harm, the house was completely destroyed, taking with it all of their belongings as it burned to the ground.

As a result of the fire, the family has had to relocate to a new city to stay with extended family, pulling their 4-year-old daughter out of school during her first week of pre-K. And while her friends and co-workers have already pulled together donations to support Brooklyn and her family’s immediate needs, we know that her impact and love of Black women and Black culture extends far beyond us. So, we are asking that those who have benefitted from her work over the years pour back into her at this time as she and her family rebuild their lives from the ground up.

Donations will be used to obtain new housing, transportation (as the family car was also destroyed in the fire), a cell phone and a laptop so Brooklyn can continue to work and provide for her family, as well as basic necessities such as food and clothing for the entire family. We understand the holidays tend to put a financial strain on individuals, but we also know few of us could imagine starting a new year losing absolutely everything we own.
