Browns fan? Cheer, but spend to stop rape instead
Tax deductible
I'm a lifelong Browns fan working through the moral quandary of the team going all in to trade for and sign quarterback Deshaun Watson.
This request will not weigh in on the pending civil complaints and NFL investigation against Watson. It won't anguish over the cognitive dissonance occasioned by his becoming the new hope of the Browns. It will neither rationalize nor condemn his behavior toward dozens of massage therapists, nor the calculus made by Browns ownership and management.
I've been waiting my whole life for the Browns to win the Super Bowl, but it shouldn't come at the cost of associating myself with severely compromised values. So instead of spending on Browns tickets and spirit gear, I've chosen to give that part of my budget, now, to a worthy and relevant local charity, the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center .
By joining this fundraiser, our cumulative voices as Browns fans will amplify a timely message about our values backed by providing real-world healing at the same time. And we can, I hope, cheer on the Browns together, in our homes and at Browns Backers clubs throughout the world in full-throated clear conscience, for the victory is already won by the righteous-hearted.
Go Browns!
